City Guide

Turning the physical fold into the interface for a cultural guide.

Melbourne arts and culture city guide

A city guide has to hold dense information while remaining useful in motion. Adding more content or navigational devices can make the object more complete and less usable at the same time.

The format itself could perform the navigation. Rather than treating the fold as a production constraint, it could determine how information was grouped, revealed and carried through the city.

The fold became both structure and interface. It established the relationship between overview and detail, allowing the reader to move through different levels of information without learning a separate navigational system.

A restrained map, typographic hierarchy and sectional grid were built around the folding sequence. Each design decision supports the same physical behaviour, turning the object’s constraint into the source of its usability and character.
